Justice Park Clean-Up

Catholic Campus Ministry has adopted Justice Park.  Once a month, the Catholic 'Stangs pick up the garbage and downed tree limbs in the park.  It doesn't take long especially when we have a lot of people show up!  The first meeting of the year was our first opportunity to clean up the park for the school year.  Father Shawn led the group in prayer before they headed out.  We had about a dozen students, so they were back to the Campus Religious Center in less than half an hour.

Welcome Grill Out (and Root Beer Floats!)

Tuesday, August 29th, we held our welcome grill-out.  This year, we also served our traditional root beer floats.   We are grateful for Jim, Henrietta, Rich and Pam for spending the afternoon prepping food, including the grilling.  We are also grateful for Paula, Kathy, Jan, Lois, Mary and Ann for their food service and root beer floats.  Finally, we are grateful for our student leadership who were ready to greet all of our guests.  Thank you, Abbey, Luci, Emma, Steven and Levi!

Catholicism 101: Pester the Priest

On Sunday, August 27, we held our first "Catholicism 101:  Pester the Priest."  Father Tony Stubeda, the Pastor of Holy Redeemer Church, leads our group discussion each month.  Typically, we have topics that are chosen by the students.  Father prepares for the topic and gives a brief presentation, followed by an opportunity for questions and answers related to the topic.  For the welcome session, we opened it up to all of the students and their questions.

We tackled such tough topics as how to handle situations with family members who are not currently practicing their faith and how to support Protestant friends who are leading Bible studies when the students aren't comfortable with how the information is being addressed.  It was an opportunity for discussion about the real issues our students face in their day to day lives.

Join us next on Sunday, September 24 as we discuss Matrimony!

Star Watch

Move In Week has a ton of activities designed to help students develop friendships and connections within the community of SMSU.  The Friends of Camden hosted a Star Watch with Mike Lynch.  The Catholic Stangs leadership team chose to attend as one of their welcome week activities.  It was a great night to see what the area around Marshall has to offer, as well as to experience, for free, the knowledge and passion that Mike has for the night sky over us!

Water Pong!

Our first official Catholic Stangs activity for the school year was Water Pong!  It looks like a combination of bowling, four square and a water fight, which it basically is!

Five gallon buckets are set up like bowling pins.  Each team, in turn, bounces or throws a ball at the buckets.  As a ball lands in the bucket, the bucket is removed from the field.  The first team to clear all the buckets wins.  After the game concluded, the water in the buckets was used in the water fight that helped combat 100+ degree heat we had the first week of classes.
